How to Get There

Lake Argyle is located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 70 kilometres by sealed road from the town of Kununurra. You can take the leisurely and extremely scenic 45-minute drive through the Carr Boyd Ranges to Lake Argyle's shores. Be amazed as you wind through jagged red ranges greeting the road, cross the impressive spillway bridge and keep your eyes peeled for the first glimpses of electric blue water peeking through the towering red ranges as you approach the mega body of water.

Quick Facts

  • 980 square kilometres, holding 10.7 Million mega litres of water makes it Australia's largest man-made lake, and one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. All contained by one 335m wall, go figure!

  • 18 to 20 times the size of Sydney Harbour

  • 26 species of fish, 150,000 waterbirds, a very healthy 25,000 + population of freshies (fresh water crocodiles)

  • The lake partially covers Argyle Station (former Durack family property), and the original cattle station, including cattle yards which still remain underwater from when the lake was filled in the 1970s.

  • Hydro-electric power plant located at the base of the dam wall supplies power to Kununurra, Wyndham & nearby Argyle Diamond Mine

  • Built across several dry seasons in the early 1970s Lake Argyle provides irrigation to hundreds of kilometres of farming land downstream of the Ord River making it largely the reason Kununurra has flourished, and continues to be the life blood of the town

  • 70 plus rocky islands, some gleaming with Zebra rock and Amethyst Crystals

What to Do

  1. Cruising on Lake Argyle: One of the best ways to experience the lake is by taking a scenic boat cruise. As you glide through the calm waters, you'll have the opportunity to see the vibrant wildlife, including freshwater crocodiles, wallabies, and a diverse range of bird species. Sunset cruises are particularly popular, offering breathtaking red, orange and occasionally purple views across the liquid horizon. Check out our friends at Lake Argyle Cruises & Discovery Resorts Lake Argyle.

  2. Swimming: Lake Argyle is safe for swimming (fresh water crocodiles are small, timid and not interested in humans unless provoked) and a perfect way to cool off on a hot day. The water is blue and clear, and the surrounding red cliffs create a surreal and stunning backdrop.

  3. Hiking: There are various hiking trails (popular tracks include Bluff Lookout 5.2km return, Ord River Gorge 1.2km return) that lead to lookout points with breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscapes. Beautiful yellow kapok trees are common among the trails throughout the dry season.

  4. Scenic Flights: For a truly awe-inspiring experience, consider taking a scenic flight over Lake Argyle. It's a great way to grasp the vastness and beauty of the region. Flights depart from Lake Argyle or Kununurra.

  5. Infinity Pool: Lake Argyle Resort has the most spectacular infinity pool in the Kimberley overlooking the lake and red ranges. Resort guests and day visitors are welcome to use the pool for a small fee (approx. $5-10 last we checked). Sunrise and sunset are best for photography, however the magic exists any time of day.

  6. Lake Argyle Dam Wall & Lookouts: Drive across the 355m dam wall, lake argyle on your left, and Ord River Gorge on your right. Learn about the construction of the wall at the lookout or enjoy a picnic and walk around the small shady park at the base of the wall. This is where Go Wild canoe tours depart to head downstream on the upper Ord river. They facilitate 1 to 3 day trips perfect for nature lovers.

  7. Mountain Biking: If you have your own bike why not get your heart pumping on the 5km mountain bike loop track that sweeps through the land surrounding Durack Homestead. This track was built by volunteers and provides great views over the lake side cliffs. Ask the resort for directions to the track or check out Trailforks.

  8. Argyle Homestead Museum: This is the original homestead which was relocated stone by stone before the lake was filled. The homestead now houses a diverse collection of artifacts and exhibits sharing the story of the Durack family whom completed one of Australia’s longest cattle drives from QLD to pioneer pastoralism in the Kimberley region. The homestead is open between 1st April - 30th September, and there is a small fee to visit.

  9. Hire a Canoe or Stand Up Paddle Board:  Explore Pannikin Bay and its many islands at your own leisure while taking in the peaceful landscapes. Pannikin Bay is sheltered offering calm flat conditions year round great for paddling.

  10. Hire a tinny or a BBQ Pontoon: Boat hire is available from Lake Argyle Cruises, explore at your own pace, camp on an island or utilize one of the moorings next to “jump rock” while you enjoy lunch and a swim. Boat hire can be great for events or families.

  11. Wet Season Waterfalls: Homestead falls can be accessed by boat/kayak or walk a short distance from Lake Argyle Caravan park. Gelly falls can be found by the adventurous skipper on the shores of the lake. Lets not forget Revolver Falls – WA’s Highest Single Drop Waterfall! Revolver is only accessible by flying or a hairy 3 day hike to its base.

  12. Spillway Bridge: On the drive to Lake Argyle you will pass over Spillway Bridge, this is the overflow from Lake Argyle into the upper Ord River. Depending on the time of year you will find rushing rapids or trickling pools. A great place for a spot of Black Bream fishing.

  13. Seasonal Scuba Diving: Occasionally scuba diving is offered in October via Pilbara Dive & Tours. Not your typical scuba diving experience as you explore the old Argyle Downs Station, small caves and maybe even spot a sleepy freshwater crocodile.

  14. Lake Argyle Swim – One of WAs best sporting events, swimmers (and not so much swimmers like myself) come from all over Australia to participate in the swim held each year in May.  Tickets are HIGHLY sort after, selling out in minutes. Categories include 20km to 10km solos, duos or quads.  The freshwater swim is just a fraction of the event’s appeal which also includes a sit down dinner for 700+ people under the stars, live music and a dancefloor that burns for hours.

  15. Lake Argyle Adventure Race – One of WA’s lesser known adrenaline pumping events held in August or September each year. The multi discipline event includes kayaking, swimming, trail running and mountain biking. Solos or Teams will be pushed to their limits in the tough terrain which makes the 2km swim in Lake Argyle sound like a walk in the park!
